The Year of the Locust
I am Pilgrim was an extremely tough act to follow; and Year of the Locust didn’t live up to the expectation. It’s not a follow up exactly, and rumour is the second I am Pilgrim is currently being written.
Hayes took over ten years to write YOTL and you can tell there was a lot of research into the countries and missions that are described in the book. It’s a fast paced thriller, but the characters are not as fully fledged as I am pilgrim - the main character is the classic CIA hero who defeats terrorism along with his boss, the leader of the CIA. It doesn’t have any big twists and the plot is very stretched at times, especially towards the end with the submarine. It’s also very long and at times I considered moving onto another book. That being said, as a stand-alone espionage book it’s fine, it just doesn’t compare to I am pilgrim.
