Whalebone Theatre

I really enjoyed the Whalebone Theatre. Set in Dorset it is a fictionalised account the Seagrave family; Christabel, Digby and Flossie putting on plays in a theatre made from the ribcage of a beached whale in 1928. It spans from 1919 to 1945 as many different eccentric visitors stay at the crumbling family estate, Chilcombe, joining in the productions and revelling in lavish parties. The story follows Europe before and after the war as the siblings become involved in service in different ways; undercover agents with the French resistance, joining the Land Army and hosting German POW or on the frontline and fighting in Africa.

If you enjoyed Still Life by Sarah Winman, it’s a similar magical story spanning years and quirky characters - highly recommend!
