The Rabbit Hutch
It follows a group of residents living in a rundown housing estate - the Rabbit Hutch - in Indiana over the course of a week in July.
With a weird and wacky storyline, the residents all affect one another; questioning how if someone benefits, someone else may be negatively compromised. There is a feeling of loss and entrapment from all the characters. This is all the more brought to light as the fictional town, Vacca Vale, was once home to a large automobile company, who when moved headquarters left unemployment and empty factories behind.
It took me a while to read, the prose was amazing, but I didn’t warm to the main character, Blandine. Critics have praised the novel and it won the Waterstones Debut Fiction Prize 2022.
